Stress relief and what you can do to manage it

Stress is s normal part of daily living. It’s neither good or bad as it has it uses. But one thing is for sure, too much stress is bad for our physical and mental health. Stress can also come from more positive sources, such as planning a special occasion, getting married or having a baby.

It’s always best to address the root cause of your stress and deal with it. But if it’s something beyond your control then learn some techniques to reduce the stress and learn to manage it, before it has a chance to take a toll on your health and wellbeing.

There are a growing number of published studies and clinical trials that suggest different complementary therapies can help to reduce stress and improve mood and sleep problems. This is supported by a recent survey by FHT*,  ( federation of holistic therapies) which showed that 85% of its complementary therapy members regularly (more than once a month) treat clients who have stress or anxiety.

In this blog we will look a various self - help techniques that can be used to reduce your stress and anxiety.

REFLEXOLOGY
Ongoing stress releases adrenaline in your body, this is the fight-or-flight response. It’s meant to be a short lived response but when we feel stress regularly our adrenal gland become overworked and this can lead to adrenal fatigue. So when a client appears with stress related illnesses the first point I go to is the adrenal glands. The adrenal reflex is found just below the ball of each foot and also on the fleshy area below the thumb on the palmar side of the hand. Gently pressing these reflex points for a few minutes can help calm the adrenal glands and reduce tension.

FACIALS
One of my most sought after facials, requested by those in the know, is the reflexology or acupressure facial. I often incorporate some Gua Sha into this treatment as well.  It’s my speciality to release tension, de-stress and put clients into a state of deep relaxation. It’s a facial massage and I am constantly amazed how tension can be released throughout the whole body when just the face is massaged. We tend to hold emotional stress in our faces – particularly in the jaw and temples – so gently massaging these areas using upward and outward circular lymphatic draining motions, which also helps to increase the circulation and oxygen while increasing muscle tone and revitalising your skin.

Facial reflexology encourages a healthy blood and lymph flow and stimulates Collagen and elastin, therefore, helping your skin to rejuvenate and minimize the appearance of ageing lines. The healing of skin conditions by Reflexology has been linked to it's ability to relieve stress, increase blood flow, and remove waste material, all of which go hand in hand with the maintenance of healthy skin.

According to its advocates, facial reflexology is effective because the face has a large number of nerves and blood vessels.

Facial reflexology combines massage with theories based on acupuncture and Chinese concepts of energy lines, or meridians.

AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy involves using plant essential oils to help improve our health and wellbeing. Lavender is one of the most studied essential oils in terms of its relaxing effects. It has been shown to calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature, as well as change brain waves to a more relaxed state. Neroli, often referred to as the ‘rescue remedy’ of essential oils, is also a valuable oil for helping to ease anxiety and stress, along with Bergamot, which is traditionally used in Italian folk medicine to relieve tension and anxiety. I like to custom blend my oils to suit the clients needs and have found that incorporating essential oils into their treatment can have a beneficial effect on their nervous system.

Skin needling, what you need to know

Skin needling what you need to know

The treatment is performed using an automated “pen” which deploys 12 tiny needles at lightening speed through the dermal layers. The needle depth is adjustable between 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm. The internal motor of the Dermapen™, powered with revolutionary AOVN™ technology, causes the needles in the Dermapen™ tip to oscillate at a rate of close to 110 revolutions per second. After the tiny needles create microscopic punctures in the skin, the subsequent healing process is accompanied by a boost of collagen. It’s this formation of new collagen that’s responsible for the visible skin improvements.

The second skin needling benefit occurs immediately after the procedure. The micro-channels create a direct path for active ingredients to penetrate to the deepest layers of the dermis to deliver targeted anti-aging results. Some popular skincare products that may be applied post skin needling are vitamins, antioxidants, hydrating serums and skin-brighteners.

Who is the Perfect Candidate for Skin Needling?

Most women and men are good candidates for collagen induction therapy because it’s minimally invasive, doesn’t cause significant skin trauma and has little downtime.

What to Expect After Skin Needling

Most people find that the recovery time after skin needling is minimal. You can expect the treatment area to be red and slightly inflamed for 24-48 hours post treatment. During this time you’ll be advised to avoid using any irritating beauty products such as acids, retinol or skincare that’s highly perfumed or synthetic. Your skin will be extremely sensitive to the sun and UV rays, so using a sunblock is a must for at least one week after the procedure.

As your skin heals you may experience some light flaking, itching and roughness. This is perfectly normal and only lasts several days to a week. You will then start to see an improved freshness and glowing skin, which is smoother, plumper and more youthful-looking.

For the best results a minimum of three treatments spaced four weeks apart would be ideal.

What you need to know about SPF

How long can you stay in the sun?

To understand an SPF - a sun protection factor, you first need  to know how an SPF is calculated?

Minutes to burn without sunscreen x SPF number = maximum sun exposure time.

For example if you burn WITHOUT A SUNSCREEN IN 10 MINUTES,  and you apply an SPF 30+ you theoretically can stay in the sun for 30 x 10mins, that's 300 minutes or FIVE HOURS!

“Most people choose an SPF 50+ believing it offers 20 times the protection of an SPF 30, it doesn’t.

SPF 30+ blocks 97% of UVB rays.

SPF 50+ blocks 98% of UVB rays.

That makes the difference between an SPF 30 and SPF 50 is JUST 1%.

1. When testing for SPF's - testing is conducted by lathering the body in sun cream, however, in reality sun lovers use HALF the amount (many even less) used  in testing, so their protection is closer to 2-2.5 hours.

2. Once your burn time for the day is up, you cannot reapply your SPF and start again!

“Think of it like putting a chicken in the oven, if you take it out mid cooking, when you put it back in it remains half cooked, you don’t start cooking time from scratch.  Once your burn time has expired you are cooked, you can’t reapply SPF and start again. Simply said you need to go inside and stay right out  of the sun for AT LEAST the next 24 hours!” (Maria, O Cosmedics Creator and CEO)

3. If you chose to use anything higher  than an SPF30+ (the most popular  being a 50+ but  they go as high as  a 70+) you are probably opting for a chemical sunscreen, one  i refer to in most cases as a "chemical shit storm!". A better option is using  a 30+ mineral based SPF that is well applied, reapplied if it is towel dried or frictioned off and simply getting out  of the sun when your natural burn time is up

4. SPF 50+ and over gives people the false perception that they can stay in the sun all day. Just remember when the chicken is cooked, it’s cooked, you can’t uncook it, so reapplying is not helpful at this time.

5. If you return to the sun and your skin is already sunburned your burn time is dramatically reduced and no SPF will protect already compromised skin.

Your skin is  the largest organ of the body, treat it with  respect.

What is a lymphatic drainage massage?

There’s nothing more relaxing than a massage and one of my all time favourites is the Lymphatic drainage massage, it has a huge amount of health benefits. So what exactly is it? it is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body.

This lymph system is our body’s sewerage system, it removes waste and toxins and plays a vital part in keeping our immune system operating at its best. Studies have shown it can vastly improve your circulation and aids in pushing waste back into the bloodstream where it can be eliminated.  It is comparable to a toilet flushing, it collects all the waste from the cells in your body so that they don’t accumulate and cause disease. These toxins are then filtered through your largest lymphatic tissue,  the spleen, which is our main immune system defence.

Some of the conditions associated with  a dysfunctional lymph system are: cellulite, arthritis, lymphodema (swelling). The lymphatic system also impacts diseases such as weight gain caused by abnormal fat and carbohydrate metabolism.

Sleep your way to glowing skin

Let’s talk skin peels! You’ve probably lots of things about peels, and you’re wondering if it would benefit you.

Peels work by using a chemical or enzyme to remove the top layer of the epidermis, the purpose of this is to remove the dead skin cells, dirt and debris, that build up on everyone’s skin.

Peels can provide a deeper exfoliation than microdermabrasion alone. They are not only very effective in removing the upper layers of damaged skin but they work hard to reduce lines and wrinkles whilst evening out the skin tone and texture of your skin. The results are a more brighter, smoother complexion.

We have so many peels to choose from and each one has it own particular benefit. My personal favourite this week is our O Cosmedics O-Biotics Multi-Functional Peel, a multi-tasking corrective treatment that does the work while you sleep, and best of all with no downtime!

Ahh! Just what I need at this busy time of the year. it’s perfect for the busy on the go, I don’t have time for messing around person ( me)

The tech bits: An advanced formulation which works to purify the skin, keep breakouts away, even out skin tone, reduce depth of lines and wrinkles and support product penetration and hydration. This is achieved through the use of cosmeceudical-grade actives which penetrate into the skins deeper layers. Containing 14% biomimetic Lactic Acid Complex, Glucon and Multi-Fruit Acids.

Lactic Acids are used to target ageing concerns. They do this by increasing cell turnover .
Glucon helps to soften and soothe dry skin and replenish lost moisture, by forming a barrier on the skin to prevent existing moisture from evaporating!

Multi-Fruit Acids, a natural source of AHA, are a concentrated blend of five botanical extracts that increases the rate of cell renewal, resulting in skin that appears smoother (making it suitable for sensitive skin. )

How to use it: Cleanse at night, then apply the peel in a fine layer, massaging it in until it is fully absorbed. Apply your usual serums and hydrators over the top and you’re done!
you can use this 2-4 times a week to ramp up that glow.

Message us and we can reserve one just for you. 0414-682-236

The benefits of collagen

Wonders of Collagen for Radiant Skin

Did you know that Collagen makes up the bulk of connective tissue and is about 25-35% of whole-body protein content? The name collagen comes from the Greek kolla meaning glue and suffix -gen denoting producing.

These are the layers that make up your skin:

Epidermis: the external covering; what we see and refer to as “skin”.

Collagen: the fibrous protein that glues and stabilizes the contact between the dermis and the epidermis.

Dermis: where the nerve endings, blood vessels and sweat glands are located.

Collagen determines if your skin is firm, supple and silky at birth.

Sadly, Collagen reaches its peak when we reach the age of 35, considered the time when actual aging starts. Reduction or damage of Collagen leads to premature sagging and wrinkles causing your skin to look older than what it ought to be.

Prime causes of Collagen damage have been attributed to:

Over-exposure to sun and UV rays.

Exposure to chemicals like Chlorine and other Herbicides.

Inhaling Polluted air, Smoking.

Emotional Stress.

Consumption of refined carbohydrates and other sugary foods.

Here at Sole Revival we create individual treatments and product recommendations to meet your skin goals. Everyone is unique and what is right for your friend is not necessarily right for you. Be led by your professional skin therapist on what will give you results, and remember that taking care of the whole skin is the key.

Top Tips For Strengthening Your Collagen:

Now that we know the importance of Collagen and the need to preserve and protect it, let’s look at ways to strengthen and nourish this vital constituent:

Radio frequency is my top favourite treatment, it is a non-surgical facelift delivering exceptionally good results for those wishing to erase the signs of aging. It’s non invasive and a great preventative treatment that will actually improve your skin, it’s a better option than Botox for that reason alone.

Stick to a healthy diet, even before you reach the 35-year threshold.

An antioxidant rich diet of Lutein (found in dark green leafy vegetables), Lycopene (found in red fruits and vegetables) and Omega-3 fatty acids (found in cold water fish).

Eat plenty of citrus fruits, strawberries and broccoli to restrict the damage from UV ray exposure.

Vitamins A, D, E and the B-complex vitamins and minerals like zinc, selenium and silica are vital to the health of your collagen.

Facial reflexology

Facial reflexology

According to its advocates, facial reflexology is effective because the face has a large number of nerves and blood vessels.Facial reflexology combines massage with theories based on acupuncture and Chinese concepts of energy lines, or meridians.According to Chinese medicine, our energy flows through the body via 12 invisible meridians. If these energy lines become blocked, imbalances occur, and this imbalance can result in aches, pains, insomnia and even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).Facial reflexologists say they can feel a change of texture as a result of these ‘imbalances’ under the upper layer of skin on the face. They are said to feel like sugar, lumps of porridge or grains of sand.By working over the face with the fingertips, they can help to break down these deposits, boosting the energy, circulatory and nervous systems.‘The brain is the control centre of the body and the face is much closer to it than the feet are, so I find combining face reflexology with foot reflexology is an incredibly powerful treatment ,’ says leading facial reflexology practitioner Jules O’Driscoll. Jules who has a clinic in Perth, explains that by stimulating the acupuncture points on the face and the feet using acupressure (pressing on them with the fingertips and rotating them on the spot). As well as being ‘energy points’ they are, according to Ms O’Driscoll important blood circulation points.  The theory is that the face and the feet are where all your nerve endings begin or end, it is a micromap of the body so, by working on a particular point of the micromap, you can affect the corresponding body part, calming it if there is inflammation or stimulating it if there is sluggishness. The reflexologist uses the fingertips to make deep, sweeping massage movements or short, fast strokes. Sessions last for 45 to 50 minutes.Ms O’Driscoll  says: ‘The treatment relaxes the entire body, and when the body relaxes, you start to heal. It’s no longer putting all its energy into stress.’Often clients are so relaxed by the therapy that they drift off into a dreamy state that some describe as being like ‘going under’.The treatment is popular with those suffering from conditions that may be stress-related such as insomnia, tension headaches and IBS. In some IBS patients, for example, there is a strong link between stress and symptoms, especially constipation. If stress can be alleviated, gut symptoms such as constipation can be alleviated too.Although IBS is normally treated through changes to diet and, if necessary, medication to alleviate abdominal pain and constipation or diarrhoea, there are those for whom such treatments do not work or who are reluctant to stick to them, and for whom reflexology may provide relief. The medical director of digestive diseases charity Core, Dr Anton Emmanuel, also consultant gastroenterologist at University College London, cites a study in which constipated patients received reflexology and bowel behaviour was monitored. In 18 out of 19 patients, not only did they feel less stressed, their bowel movements became more normal. Dr Emmanuel believes that the effects of reflexology on IBS-sufferers are about more than relaxation. ‘I think it may have an effect on the nervous system. Pain is perceptual: any intervention to alleviate pain has to work on the brain and the nervous system.‘It’s plausible that reflexology could do something to the brain’s reflex control of the gut and how pain is processed, in a way that is comparable with how conventional IBS treatments work.’

Why We Should Be Using Personalised Skincare

The future of skincare is personalisation. I’ve never believed in the one-size-fits-all principle, it is just not an effective way to deliver treatments or recommend products. Maybe it is my complementary healthcare background, but I have always been client centred and believed that I should treat what is presented on the day with appropriate tools chosen for the individual.

That is why at Sole Revival, you can have the option of booking in a customised facial for the amount of time you want and we will deliver a truly unique experience where the treatment and products used has been chosen specifically for you.

With an increased understanding of the skin microbiome, we now know that 99.9% of our skin microbiome is unique! Just like our fingerprints, no-one’s skin microbiome is the same.

Here at SR we have even taken it one step further by using a skin DNA kit to analysis your skin and report the findings, this will ensure that you are not only using the correct treatments and products right now but you are future proofing your skin by making the changes that the DNA report highlights could be a potential risk for you. This allows us as health and beauty professionals to customise their recommendations and prescriptions taking the future of your skin to the next level.

We are all unique, and our skin is no different…

How to future proof your skin.

SkinDNA™ takes the guesswork out of skin care instead using science to identify the most suitable skin ingredients and treatment modalities based on your DNA.  At its core, SkinDNA™ uses the correct ingredients and treatment modalities to effectively target your genetic blueprint and ensure you never waste a single cent again on products or treatments that don’t work for you!

Performed by O Skin Expert, Jules at Sole Revival, the revolutionary DNA laboratory test examines 16 genetic markers (SNPs) in 5 categories associated with skin aging:
1. Firmness + Elasticity: Identify if you are a carrier of key genetic variations associated with accelerated collagen loss even before the signs have become visible

2. Wrinkling: Not often discussed, Glycation affects collagen and elastin fibres glycation and is now well recognised as a leading cause of accelerated skin aging.

3. Sun Damage + Pigmentation: The sun’s UV rays are one of the most significant causes of premature skin aging. An individual’s genes play an important role in determining how well their skin can naturally cope under the strains of the sun

4. Free Radical Damage: Scientists now believe that free radicals are causal factors in nearly every known disease, from heart disease to arthritis, cancer to cataracts. In fact, free radicals are a main culprit in the aging process of the skin itself

5. Sensitivity + Inflammation: Excessive inflammation is one of the most common themes in early onset skin aging. While it is a helpful response in the short term, if inflammation continues, it can play a negative role. Often subtle, the signs include skin sensitivity, redness and irritation

The SkinDNA™ test takes just two minutes and three simple, easy steps to unlock your skin secrets:
1. Collect: A swab from the inside your cheek will be collected and sent to the accredited SkinDNA™ lab for analysis

2. Diagnose: Within 7 days you will receive a comprehensive SkinDNA™ Report, analysed and explained by Jules at Sole Revival, Who is an O Skin Expert. This will rank each genetic marker low, medium or high risk. From these results a customised skin health plan, combining product, supplements and treatments will be created for you.

3. Prescribe: Using the results from the SkinDNA™ Test your therapist is able to confidentially recommend an appropriate routine to prevent and correct skin concerns and preserve a more youthful looking skin

With more than 15,000 DNA population wide samples from various groups stored entirely in-house, SkinDNA™ is leading the way in Dermal DNA Science. The collaboration of geneticists, cosmetic physicians, skin scientists and volunteer study participants commenced their work in 2006 with two principle objectives:

(1) to identify the genetic factors that contribute to age-related changes in the skin; and

(2) to identify actionable pathways available for each of those genetic factors in order to help each and every individual worldwide preserve a more youthful looking skin.

So book in a consultation and start your skin journey.

WHAT ARE THE BEST TREATMENTS FOR GETTING RID OF BLACKHEADS ?

Many people gets blackheads. They may be satisfying to squeeze but all that squeezing can damage pores. If you suffer from blackheads it might be time to take a trip to Sole Revival. Where they will create a customised treatment specifically for your skin.

So what is a blackhead?

A blackhead is not dirt trapped in the pores. Pores are connected to oil glands that produce sebum to keep your skin feeling soft. Blackheads are pores that are clogged with sebum and dead skin. When the sebum and skin cells are exposed to oxygen, they become black in colour. Blackheads are caused by abnormal secretion of sebum. Therefore in many cases, frequent face washing can exacerbate the problem and there has been little evidence to support this method as a deterrent.

However, a daily skin routine with a good cleanser, toner and moisturiser can keep blackheads at bay.

What causes blackheads?
Blackheads are caused by dead skin and oil getting trapped in your pore. They can also be caused by a diet high in dairy. There are also links between smoking and the severity of skin problems.

How can we treat blackheads?

If you’ve ever fallen victim to pore strips, harsh exfoliators or the latest mask treatment, you will know how little they do to actually stop them reoccurring. Some of the best treatments for treating blackheads are;

Microdermabrasion,

Ultrasonic dermabrasion

Chemical peels.

Physical peels

Laser

Led

Masks

The goal is to remove the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells to reveal the healthy skin underneath and unclog the pores.

What are the Benefits of Dermablading

Top things to know before Dermablading!

Provides deeper product penetration of your products. Removes soft facial hair that traps dirt and oils Delivers smoother skinSafe procedure for removing dead skin cells and facial “peachfuzz”Reduces the appearance of acne scarsDiminishes the look of fine linesWorks on all skin typesInstant results and no down timeNo more face hair and glowing

What is Dermblading?
It is an effective and safe exfoliation procedure. Facial resurfacing utilizing Dermal blading technique to shave the surface of the skin to remove excess dead skin and facial peach fuzz hairs. The tool is held at a 45-degree angle and is brushed along the skin to remove the hair and skin cells. The procedure is only performed on the face and is not used for shaping the eyebrows, which the hair is much thicker. It is generally a stand alone procedure, it does create deeper product penetration boosting the skincare products effects. The procedure makes skin look and feel smoother and can reduces the appearance of acne scars.

  • 1 - What are the benefits of dermablading?

The results can vary for everyone, you can expect to see smoother skin, zero peach facial fuzz (until it grows back,), with brighter-looking skin. And because you’re removing all your dead skin cells, your skincare products will better penetrate your skin when you apply them, making them all the more effective.

  • 2 - What are the side effects of dermablading?

In the hands of a professional, dermblading is safe for all skin types, especially those with sun damage, fine lines, dry patches, and dull skin. But, of course, there are some contraindications: If you have highly reactive, sensitive skin (like those with rosacea, highly vascular, keratosis pilaris), you may want to pass on this one, since it might irritate your skin. Same goes for anyone with inflamed acne - unsurprisingly, sliding a medical grade scalpel over your pimples can irritate them and worsen existing breakouts.

  • 3 - Will dermablading cause breakouts?

Quite the opposite. A buildup of dead skin can clog your pores and hair follicles, which can not only cause pimples but also block your skincare products from penetrating the skin, which is why exfoliation is essential for maintaining an even, healthy glow. If you already have an existing breakout, you’ll unfortunately need to sit this treatment out.

  • 4 - Who should I see for my dermablading treatment?

Don’t trust just anyone to perform the procedure. At Sole Revival we are professionally trained therapists for dermablading, and please don’t try this at home. Since dermablading is performed with medical grade scalpels (not your average razor), you should leave it to the pros to avoid nicks, ingrowns, and stubble.

  • 5 - How much will a dermablading treatment cost?

You can expect to spend $120 for 60 mins treatment,  (includes a combination of IPL or LED, collagen mask, enzyme peel) which is customised for each client concerns and needs.
You’ll notice a difference in your skin’s texture and tone immediately.

  • 6 - Does dermablading hurt?

It’s not  painful at all. Think of it like shaving any other part of your body. Can you feel it? Yes. Does it hurt? Not if you’re doing it right.

  • 7 - Is there any downtime after a dermablading treatment?

Some light redness can be expected but not always. Its perfectly fine and common to make appointment during lunch and go right back to work after the treatment.

  • 8.Can you wear makeup after dermablading?

Ever notice how facial peach fuzz tends to stand out evenmore underneath foundation and face powders? Well, since dermablading removes all the little hairs on your face, your makeup will actually glide on super smoothly. although it’s tempting to see the results right away, try to avoid on a face full of makeup immediately after your dermablading treatment.
Try to let the skin breathe for the rest of the day, If you need to wear makeup, you can, but your skin barrier is more open and may become more irritated. Once your skin has had time to settle (about a day), proceed with foundation.
At Sole Revival we carry I Cosmedics Medi sooth and spf to give you a gentle coverage

9. Will shaving my face make my hair grow back thicker?

Dermablading will not make your hair grow back thicker or darker. Once your hair begins to grow back, it might feeldifferent because the hair was cut straight across, but it’s actually the same texture as it was before and it will grow at the same speed.

  • 10. How often do I need dermablading treatments?

Since this is a deeply exfoliating treatment, Sole Revival recommends  waiting at least a month between appointments, although some clients with sensitive skin can limit their treatments to even once a season or special occasions, Brides wanting glowing hair free glow before the wedding makeup and big day.

  • 11.Will dermablading make my skin more sensitive to the sun?

Post-exfoliation, your skin will be especially susceptible to the sun, so if you don’t take sun protection seriously you might want to skip this treatment altogether. Otherwise, you’ll need to be diligent with the Sunscreen afterward— use  a gentle  SPF 30 +— Sole Revival stocks Spf by O Cosmedics

What Is A Professional Facial? And why do we need to get them?

A facial is a multi-step treatment completed by a professionally trained therapist, that boosts your at-home skin care.

We asked dermal clinician and head founder of Sole Revival why we should be making regular professional facials a priority. She says:

“A good facial delivered by a professional who understands the skin and how it operates can identify where your problem areas are and how best to rectify those. You need to be looking at the skin tone, it’s elasticity, pores, and it’s barrier strength. Using professional products to rectify any damage can be done in a non invasive and controlled manner. It’s all about creating the ideal programme for your unique skin concerns. It can be an anti-aging treatment, a skin problem, such as pigmentation, rosacea or acne. The aim in your session is to address the individual concerns, and create a treatment that will use the correct professional products that are designed to treat them. The skill is in knowing what the issue is, what is causing it and how best to correct it.

Here at Sole Revival you can have the option of booking in a time, rather than a specific treatment and In that time you will receive the treatments that are suited to your skin goals.

Why Do I Need A Facial?

A facial is the best way to ensure you see the long term results you want in your skin. Jules says: “ facials covers a variety of different techniques and treatments which includes caring for the overall health of the skin.”  Think of facials like visits with your dentist. Sure, you brush and floss daily, but you still get your teeth professionally cleaned. In the same way, regular professional facial treatments are an essential complement to your daily skin care routine. Professional facials take your complexion to the next level. Many skin conditions need regular maintenance and it is this professional skin treatment alongside the home care that will successfully deliver results quicker, better and safer.  Prevention is a lot easier and less expensive than repairing damage. If you put yourself in the hands of a good therapist they will guide you and advise you on the best treatments, the correct products and how to use them. They can see what is happening with your skin and they know when you need to be changing things and addressing issues, before they become problems.

Get An Expert Opinion

it’s reassuring to get professional advice on a regular basis. For example, is your skin really dry - or is it actually a build up of dead skin or is it dehydrated? It can be tricky to sort out what you are dealing with, but this is exactly what a good skin therapist has been trained to deal with. During consultation, your therapist will be able to diagnose your skin and develop treatments specifically catered to you.

Relax And Unwind

Let’s be honest. One of the best reasons for getting a facial is also the relaxation you get to experience. And since stress always plays a factor on the condition of your skin, by creating a relaxing environment for you, your treatment will leave you glowing from the inside out.

What Is The Difference Between A Professional And A Diy Facial?

Why can’t I Diy this experience? Light some candles, take extra time applying my favorite Sole Revival products, how is it really that different? Actually, there are many techniques in a facial that go far beyond cleansing. Incorporating facial massage, with specialised treatments and products are just some of the benefits of a professional facial.

Melville mums speaks to head therapist and founder of Sole Revival

Jules. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I moved from Scotland back to Perth to spend time with my three gorgeous grandchildren. I miss all my friends terribly at times. You don’t realise how many networks you have until they are gone

What inspired you to start Sole Revival?

I couldn’t find a job that catered to my skills. I work very differently from the typical therapist. Every client is unique and every treatment and product should be chosen to match their skin concerns and goals. I research everything and will only use top quality products that deliver results. I have an Ayurvedic Vegan range and a medical grade range. I’m holistic and hi-tech and the combination works very well.

Has the COVID-19 situation affected business?

I switched to online consultations and spent my time brushing up my skills and doing online training. And I was finally brave enough to do what I always wanted to do and create a bespoke treatment menu, where you book your time and we deliver the treatment that’s best for you. It’s exciting and I have the COVID shut down to thank for that. I had put off doing it but it’s been amazing!

So, what’s next for Sole Revival?

I also introduced new medical grade treatments that are really delivering great results, clients love it and so do I. It’s so rewarding.

How Often Should You Get A Facial?

There’s nothing quite like a professional facial, that clean and firm feeling you get after your skin’s been cleansed, massaged and custom-treated by an expert therapist. That sort of radiance is almost impossible to achieve without the help of a professional who will stimulate your circulation, increase the oxygen to your cells and stimulate your lymphatic drainage. Which is why we all look into the mirror and wonder, “Why do I not get this more often?”

Back to our original question, how often should I get a facial? The simplest answer is 28 Days ( everyone skin is different though so some need to come more often and some can be happier waiting longer between treatments.

WHY? The skin regenerates every 28 days. New skin cells are born in the basal layer, the deepest of the four layers that make up the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of our skin. These new cells divide in two with half of them remaining where they are and the other half pushing up through to the upper layers, changing shape and appearance as they move up. By the time they reach the surface of the skin, the cells have lost their nucleus. They’re essentially dead and slough away in a constant process of renewal.

So, now that you understand the amount of time it takes for new cells to generate and move up to the surface, ideally once a month should suit your skin, anymore and you can run the risk of aggravating your skin. You want to be getting a facial often enough to gain the maximum effectiveness, but not so often that you’re doing damage.

Jules O’Driscoll at Sole Revival in Perth follows the cell renewal schedule for timing facials: “Generally speaking, every four to six weeks would be ideal since your skin will regenerate itself approximately every 28 days.” Not only does this timing suit the skin cell turnover, it also means you’re regularly checking in with your therapist to ensure your skincare routine is on track and to be adjusting your facial and products to maximise your professional treatments delivering what your skin needs.

While a facial every four to six weeks is a safe bet, it also varies according to what kinds of facials you’re getting.  “The frequency of receiving a facial can also depend on the specific concern that is being treated,” says Jules “Someone with severe acne or hyperpigmentation may visit us for a series of more frequent treatments initially until we get them back on track and have it under control.”

Facial For Acne Treatment

We have a specific series of proven protocols for acne that have been successful. Generally speaking you will receive a series of 6-8 treatments spaced about 1-2 weeks apart. These may include light chemical peels, led light therapy, healing masks and specific at home products, At the end of the treatment programme your skin will be reassessed and usually you can expect to be put on to a monthly preventive programme. If we stay on the subject of acne, LED light therapy is proving to be a really good option, it’s non-invasive, and very effective. It’s NASA technology and was developed to increase cellular turnover and promote healing. From there it was used in various other fields until the skin and beauty industry adopted it to tackle aging and skin repair. Blue LED light reaches sebaceous glands where it targets an acne-producing bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. Longer wavelength infrared penetrates deeper into the skin and is supposed to stimulate collagen protein and soothe inflammation for fuller, smoother-looking skin, whilst the blue and red LED combo may reduce the size of the sebaceous glands, so you don’t produce as much oil.

Facial For Hyperpigmentation

Like acne, hyperpigmentation facials also use employ chemical peels and masks to treat areas affected by melanoma. Take note pigmentation can appear on women who are pregnant and in that case I say wait at least six months until you look at treatments. You will be pleasantly surprised at how often it can dramatically reduce or even disappear. Another option for pigmentation is Laser therapy or intense pulsed light. Expect a weekly schedule of treatments for a period of four to five weeks, but, as Jules points out, “The frequency of receiving a facial for hyperpigmentation would depend on the client’s skin sensitivity.”

Monthly Microdermabrasion

Another high-tech treatment is microdermabrasion where you trick your skin into replacing old skin cells on the surface of your skin with new ones. How? By making your skin think it’s being injured, which it is in a way, though it’s been done very gently. A microdermabrasion machine exfoliates your skin with a diamond tip while gently suctioning up the dead cells. Quick and non-invasive, microdermabrasion will brighten and smooth out your skin but the immediate after-effects can be a little redness and sensitivity. It’s best to keep these sessions to once a month.
