Reflexology and Labour

Reflexology and Labour

It’s not too often a new study is published on the benefits of Reflexology. Still, every quarter I get a copy of the International Therapist magazine which always has many interesting articles on research and developments in the area of holistic therapies. This time I was excited to read about a study into the effects of ‘Antenatal reflexology and pregnancy and labour outcomes’ by Dr Julie McCullough. As a reflexologist and scientist, Dr McCullough followed her interest in pregnancy and maternity care. McCullough joined an established research team at Ulster University investigating pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic girdle pain (LBPGP), a condition experienced by between 66% and 71% of women during pregnancy, with 20% to 65% experiencing PGP. This condition can continue up to 10 years after the pregnancy with varying degrees of mobility and pain.

McCullough carried out the study over two years, between 2012 -2014. The participants in the study were 90 first-time mums who were experiencing LBPGP. The participants were split into three groups and were given treatment in the 3rd trimester for a 6-week period:

Group 1 – Received a 30-minute reflexology session for six weeks in along with usual antenatal care

Group 2 – Had the sham treatment, which was a 30-minute footbath treatment

Group 3 – Received the usual antenatal care for LBPGP.

The pain and frequency threshold was measured on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scale from 0-10cm. Each participant also gave saliva samples at the beginning and end of the six weeks to measure stress hormones, *cortisol and *beta-endorphin.

The Results of the study

A total of 64 women completed the study, 24 in the reflexology group, 15 in the footbath group and 25 in the usual care group. During the six weeks, the LBPGP frequency increased for the participants having the footbath treatment whilst the usual care group reduced by 0.63cm on the VAS scale and the reflexology group reduced by 1.63 cm (Close et al. 2015). A change of 1.5cm or more on the VAS pain scale is classified as a clinically important change (Ostelo et al., 2008; Gallagher et al., 2001), which means it is significant to the patient. (Farrar et al., 2000)

Over the six weeks, it was found that *Beta-endorphin levels increased by 8.8% for the foot bath group and 10.1% for the usual care group. In the reflexology group, the beta-endorphin levels were reduced by 15.2%. Cortisol increased by 31.8% in the footpath group, 31.4% In the usual care group and 18.8% in the Reflexology group.

Labour data was collected for the 2nd stage of labour, considered more accurate than the 1st stage. It was found in 2nd stage labour was 44 minutes shorter in the reflexology group compared with the usual care and the foot bath group.

Points to consider

From the results, we can take away the following; Reflexology has helped reduce pain significantly for participants of the study, and beta-endorphin levels and 2nd stage labour have also been reduced considerably.

However, as always, studies of this kind are small and more participants would make the results more compelling. Further studies of this kind to cross-reference and ts would be welcomed. It’s important to note that the results of this study do not guarantee that the benefits of Reflexology will be the same or similar for everyone. Finally, McCullough identifies we now know Reflexology affects hormone production in pregnant women. Research needs to be done to find out ‘why’ and ‘how’ Reflexology affects hormone levels.

*Beta-endorphins are released to counteract pain felt in the body.

*Cortisol is a steroid hormone which controls blood sugar levels, controls salt and water balance, acts as an anti-inflammatory, influences blood pressure and helps the development of the foetus.

Not All Exosomes Are Created Equal – Here’s What You Need to Know

Forget rejuvenation—regeneration is where the future of skincare is headed.

Dp Dermaceuticals™ is at the forefront of this revolution with Exosome technology, creating products that don’t just feel nice—but offer serious regenerative powers.

Exosomes are tiny vesicles, ranging from 30 to 150 nanometers in size—that’s more than 1,000 times smaller than a skin pore! Their size allows for deep penetration, delivering regenerative signals directly to the skin and hair follicles.

Here’s why you want to start using Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-SKIN™ and Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-GROW™ yesterday!

Not All Exosomes are Created Equal

Excited about what Exosomes can do for your skin and hair? You’re not alone. But with so many products out there, it’s hard to know which ones work best. Here’s why our Exosomes are special…

(Spoiler: This technology is so advanced that we are the only brand using these incredible innovations.)

Highest Quality for Head-turning Results

Our Exosomes are specially designed to target the cells that need them most. Our unique filtration process ensures only viable Exosomes are used in our products. They are easily accepted by your cells, delivering their benefits effectively for noticeable results.

Exclusive Plateau-busting Molecule for Lasting Results

Patented IMMUNE TOLERANT HLA-G COMPLEXA™ Dp Dermaceuticals EXOSOME core technology is based on the youngest, most potent, and safest human-compatible source. They also contain a special molecule that’s clinically proven to promote an effect that prevents immunity to Exosome therapy over time.

Why is this important? Exosomes, by their very nature, typically trigger an immune response, which means that the body becomes resistant to their effects and results decline over time. Often you'll need to take a break from using Exosomes to combat this resistance, which means hitting pause on achieving desired results.

By comparison, the patented Exosomes used in Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-GROW and Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-SKIN are highly biocompatible and non-immunogenic, allowing them to continue to deliver their rejuvenating cargo to target cells. No unwanted immune response is triggered.

In this way, the patented technology can provide cumulative long-term benefits without diminishing performance. Results just keep getting better the more you use the products!

Powerful Microneedling Synergy

Dermapen Treatments™ with Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-SKIN or EXO-GROW work together to give skin and hair a powerful boost of youth. Why is that? Well, both technologies work on the principle of supporting and enhancing the skin’s own natural healing and regenerating abilities.

The Exosomes support the rejuvenating biological processes stimulated by the needling. And the needles create channels for the Dp Dermaceuticals Exosomes products to travel down.

Exosomes are so tiny that they can travel deep into the skin (including hair follicles) to deliver rejuvenation signals on a cellular level. About 7,000 Exosomes fit onto the end of a single 33-gauge needle, with the potential for 806,400,000 rejuvenating Exosomes to be delivered per minute during a Dermapen Treatment™.

If you’re looking for a lasting way to visibly improve the signs of ageing, rosacea, pigmentation, and even hair loss, book a consult with your nearest Authorised Treatment Provider to discuss what could be possible with an Exosome Dermapen Treatment.

Enjoy the Perks of At-home Exosome Care

While pairing Exosomes with microneedling gives the best results, you can still benefit from Exosome technology at home. Due to their nature, Exosomes can easily penetrate the skin barrier and reach deeper layers, including the hair follicles.

The advanced Exosome tech in Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-SKIN™ and Dp Dermaceuticals EXO-GROW™ means the more you use these products, the better the results continue for a cumulative effect. Whether using them between clinic visits or on their own, these collections represent next-gen skincare for very real and exceptional results.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the at-home solutions…

Tightening jowls & neck skin

The best tried and tested treatments available to tighten the loose skin on the jowls on the face and neck.

Radio frequency (RF) treatments are commonly used to tighten skin and improve laxity by stimulating collagen production through heat. When performing RF treatments on the neck, caution should be taken around sensitive areas, including the esophagus.

While RF can generally be safe for the neck when applied properly, it is advisable to avoid direct treatment over the esophagus due to its delicate structure and proximity to vital nerves, vessels, and organs.

The heat generated during RF treatment can potentially cause discomfort or complications in this area.

Therefore, many professionals recommend focusing on the sides of the neck (the platysma) rather than the front, where the esophagus is located.

Improving a “gobble neck” or loose skin around the neck typically requires treatments that target skin laxity and collagen production. Here are several non-surgical beauty treatments that can help:

1. Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy

• How it works: RF uses heat to stimulate collagen and elastin production, tightening the skin over time. This treatment can gradually improve skin laxity.

• Recommended frequency: Multiple sessions (3-6) are often needed for visible results.

• Suitability: Best for mild to moderate loose skin.

2. Ultrasound Therapy (Ultherapy)

• How it works: Ultrasound energy penetrates deep into the skin layers to stimulate collagen. Ultherapy can target deeper tissue than RF, offering longer-lasting tightening effects.

• Suitability: Works well for more moderate sagging.

3. Microneedling with Radiofrequency (RF Microneedling)

• How it works: Combines the benefits of traditional microneedling (which stimulates collagen by creating tiny injuries in the skin) with RF to enhance collagen production deeper in the skin.

• Results: After a series of treatments, you may see tightening in loose skin.

4. Laser Skin Tightening

• How it works: Non-ablative laser treatments (like fractional lasers) stimulate collagen production to reduce the appearance of sagging skin.

• Suitability: Effective for both mild to moderate skin laxity

Neck Lift Threads (PDO Threads)

• How it works: Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are inserted under the skin to physically lift sagging areas and stimulate collagen production.

• Results: Immediate lifting effect followed by gradual skin tightening as collagen is produced.

Topical Treatments with Retinoids and Peptides

• How they work: Retinoids stimulate collagen production, and peptides can improve skin elasticity when applied consistently over time.

• Suitability: Best for early signs of sagging, and it’s a good supportive treatment along with in-clinic procedures. We don’t perform this treatment at SR.

 Gua Sha and Facial Reflexology

• How it works: Regularly massaging the neck area with tools like Gua Sha can promote circulation and improve lymphatic drainage, which may help tighten skin over time. However, this method works best when combined with other more intensive treatments.

. Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting)

• How it works: Targets and freezes fat cells under the chin, which can reduce the appearance of a double chin or sagging fat, improving the overall contour of the neck.

• Suitability: Ideal for clients with excess fat under the chin rather than just loose skin.

Combination Treatments:

For best results, many practitioners recommend a combination of treatments like RF, ultrasound, and microneedling, paired with a strong skincare regimen to enhance collagen production and skin laxity

Consulting with a skin professional will ensure the right approach based on the level of laxity and skin type.

Everything You Need to Know About Dermapen 4 Skin Needling: Preparation, Procedure, and Aftercare

Everything You Need to Know About Dermapen 4 Skin Needling: Preparation, Procedure, and Aftercare

Are you considering skin needling with Dermapen 4 to rejuvenate your skin, minimize scars, or improve texture? This advanced microneedling treatment has gained popularity for its ability to stimulate natural collagen production and improve overall skin health. Before diving into your treatment, let’s walk through what you need to know about preparation, the procedure, post-care, and who should avoid skin needling.

What Is Dermapen 4?

Dermapen 4 is an advanced microneedling device that creates micro-injuries in the skin to trigger your body’s natural healing process. This process helps boost collagen and elastin production, promoting smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin. Unlike traditional microneedling, Dermapen 4 offers precision and adjustable needle depth, making it suitable for a wide range of skin concerns and treatment areas, including the face, neck, and décolletage.

Preparation for Your Dermapen 4 Skin Needling Treatment

Proper preparation is crucial to ensuring the best results from your Dermapen 4 treatment. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Avoid Active Ingredients: For at least three days before your appointment, stop using any active ingredients in your skincare routine. This includes retinoids, exfoliating acids (like glycolic or salicylic acid), and any other harsh or sensitizing products. These can make your skin more vulnerable during the procedure.

  2. Hydrate and Protect: Ensure your skin is well-hydrated leading up to the treatment. Drink plenty of water and use a gentle moisturizer. Also, avoid direct sun exposure, as sunburned skin is highly sensitive and should not undergo needling.

  3. Consultation: Before the treatment, you’ll have a consultation to ensure you’re a suitable candidate. This is particularly important if you have sensitive skin or any skin conditions that might affect the treatment.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The Dermapen 4 treatment itself is minimally invasive and typically lasts around 30–60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Here’s a breakdown of what happens:

  • Cleansing: The skin will be thoroughly cleansed to remove makeup, oils, and impurities.

  • Numbing Cream (no longer recommended): While the treatment is generally tolerable, a few people do find it too much and choose to use a numbing cream. However we do not use it as it is now no longer recommended by the experts in the field due to the fact it changes your vascular restriction flow and therefore your visual end point. Please do tell your therapist if you are planing on applying it so that you are both on the same page with what is happening with the skins response.

  • Serum Infusion: High-quality serums, specifically designed by DermapenWorld, are applied during the needling process. These serums are tailored to your skin concerns, whether it’s scarring, hydration, anti-aging, or brightening. The micro-channels created by the needling allow the serums to penetrate deeply into the skin, enhancing results and speeding up recovery.

  • Needling: The Dermapen4 device is glided over the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries. These injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing response, encouraging collagen production.

Aftercare: How to Maximise Your Results

After your Dermapen4 treatment, the skin may appear slightly red or feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. Here’s how to care for your skin post-treatment:

  1. Gentle Skincare: For the first three days post-procedure, it’s essential to use only gentle, non-irritating products. We recommend the Dp Dermaceuticals Range of Cleanser and Moisturiser, which are specially formulated to support the healing process and soothe the skin.

  2. Avoid Active Ingredients: As with the pre-treatment stage, refrain from using active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids for at least 3-5 days after your treatment.

  3. Sun Protection: Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to wear SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid direct sun exposure.

  4. No Makeup for 24 Hours: To allow the skin time to recover, avoid applying makeup for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

  5. Stay Hydrated: Hydrated skin heals faster, so drink plenty of water and continue using a gentle moisturiser to support the recovery process.

Contraindications: Who Should Avoid Dermapen 4 Skin Needling?

While Dermapen4 is a safe and effective treatment for many, it’s not suitable for everyone. You should avoid skin needling if you:

  • Have active acne, cold sores, or any other skin infection.

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (unless cleared by your doctor). The reason I say this one is simply that you could be wasting efforts trying to rectify skin issues whilst pregnant. Many skin conditions clear up on their own after birth. Secondly, your body has enough to do supporting another human being it does not need any more work. Each therapist has their own opinions on this though.

  • Have a history of keloid scarring.

  • Are undergoing chemotherapy or have an active skin cancer diagnosis.

  • Are using medications like Accutane or blood thinners (consult your doctor for approval).

Always disclose your medical history and current medications to your skincare professional before treatment to ensure that Dermapen4 is the right choice for you.

How Often Should You Get Skin Needling?

The frequency of treatments depends on your skin goals. For general skin maintenance, 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are recommended. However, for more targeted concerns like acne scars or stretch marks, you may need additional sessions.

In conclusion, Dermapen4 skin needling is a powerful tool in the world of skincare, offering a range of benefits from anti-aging to scar reduction. By following proper preparation and aftercare instructions, you can ensure optimal results and minimal downtime. As always, consult with a qualified professional to determine if this treatment is right for you and to get personalised recommendations tailored to your skin type and concerns

Q & A why is there swelling on the side of my foot. ?

The area that is swollen is the Bladder point.

In reflexology, the bladder reflex point is typically located on the inner side of the foot, around the arch and in the center of the foot.

If you have a a puffy or swollen bladder area on your foot, this could be related to several potential causes, both physical and energetic.

Possible Causes:

  1. Fluid Retention:

    • Swelling in the feet, particularly in the bladder area, can be a sign of fluid retention (edema), which might indicate that the body is holding onto excess water. This could be linked to kidney or bladder function imbalances.

  2. Lymphatic Congestion:

    • The body’s lymphatic system helps remove toxins and excess fluids. If the lymph system is congested or sluggish, this can lead to localised swelling in reflex areas related to detoxification and elimination, such as the bladder.

  3. Stress and Tension:

    • Stress can cause the body to become imbalanced, potentially leading to issues in organ systems like the bladder. Reflexology aims to reduce stress, which could alleviate swelling indirectly.

  4. Urinary System Imbalance:

    • Reflexology principles suggest that swelling in the bladder area might reflect an energetic imbalance in the urinary system. This could be tied to issues like dehydration, bladder infections, or other urinary tract problems.

  5. Circulatory Issues:

    • Poor circulation in the lower extremities can result in swelling, which may appear in areas corresponding to internal organs, including the bladder.

Possible Solutions:

  1. Reflexology Treatments:

    • Regular reflexology sessions focused on the bladder reflex, as well as kidney and lymphatic points, can help improve the function of these systems by encouraging better energy flow and circulation.

    • Reflexology can stimulate the body’s natural detoxification processes, promoting better fluid balance and organ function.

  2. Hydration:

    • Ensuring proper hydration is crucial for bladder and kidney function. Encourage the client to drink more water if they are not consuming enough, as this can help flush toxins and reduce swelling.

  3. Dietary Adjustments:

    • Reducing salt intake can help minimise fluid retention. Encourage the client to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and foods that support the urinary system (e.g., cranberries or parsley).

  4. Lymphatic Drainage Techniques:

    • In addition to reflexology, incorporating light massage or lymphatic drainage techniques around the foot and lower leg could help reduce the swelling and promote circulation.

  5. Stress Management:

    • Reflexology can be a key tool for managing stress, which, in turn, may alleviate any related tension or imbalances affecting the bladder area.

Benefits of Reflexology:

  • Improved Circulation: Reflexology boosts blood and lymphatic flow, helping reduce swelling in the feet and throughout the body.

  • Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Reflexology induces deep relaxation, which supports the body’s ability to self-heal and maintain balance in organ systems, including the urinary tract.

  • Detoxification: Stimulating reflex points corresponding to the bladder and kidneys can encourage toxin removal and better fluid regulation.

  • Holistic Balance: By treating the whole person, reflexology promotes harmony between physical, emotional, and energetic aspects, potentially addressing the root cause of the swelling.

By addressing both the symptoms (swelling) and the underlying causes through reflexology, your client can experience relief, enhanced organ function, and a greater sense of well-being.

Reflexology helps to maintain homeostasis in the body.

When the body is in balance the whole person feels balanced.

What’s the difference between SPF 30 and 50?

A very common question: What’s the difference between SPF 30 and 50?

The answer:

SPF 30 offers 97% protection against UV, allowing 3% of UV to enter the skin while SPF 50 offers 98% protection against UV, allowing for 2% of UV to enter the skin.

Whilst this may not seem like a lot, it is still stronger protection, especially when it comes to the length of time SPF 30 and 50 offer.

The general rule of thumb is that an SPF 30 will protect your skin from burning and damage for 30 times longer than it would usually take you to burn without any sun protection.

SPF 50 is protecting you 50 times longer.

Still find it confusing ?

Let us break it down a little further: If your skin takes 5 minutes to burn in direct sunlight without any SPF than an SPF 30 would protect you for 150 minutes (5 minutes x 30 = 150). Whereas an SPF 50 would protect you for 250 minutes.

SPF 50 it is then, however, you must also remember that often those who use SPF 50 feel somewhat bulletproof in the sun and can easily forget to reapply.

Reapplying is without a doubt the most effective way to prevent the damage that can occur from excessive UV exposure.

What to Expect, When You Start using good quality products

What to Expect
When You Start using Active ingredients in skin care products

Rather than claim the Holy Grail on barely-there volumes, the products that deliver active ingredients in their optimum doses and the ones we have chosen to partner with, are the O Cosmedics, it is formulated with potent, concentrated active ingredients.

Each formulation is based on ‘functional actives’, where we use the active ingredient to the dose or percentage that the scientist recommends will actually make a difference to the skin.

If you’re just starting your new skin care journey with active ingredients, here’s three things that may happen:

1. Your skin immediately loves it: Perfect outcome.

2. Your skin may purge: You may experience one of the following:

warmth as the actives enter your skin, your skin may flush, tingle, breakout, feel dry or flaky.

Don’t panic.

Simply stop using everything and allow your skin to return to normal.

Reintroduce the products one at a time giving your skin time to adapt to a new level of skin care.

Purging means your cells are annoyed with you for making them “get back to work” and are resisting acclimatising. Be patient and they will soon understand who’s boss!

3. Your skin may look older: Ok, fair to say not the look we were going for yet a good sign just the same.

This can happen if you are not used to using an active skin care, so when you do it pushes the underlying redundant cells to the skin’s surface and your skin can look dull, devitalised and yes, older.

The good news is this is a sign your products are working, and the redundant cells are turning over! The best option is to visit an approved professional clinic who will perform an enzyme peel to reveal fresh, radiant, youthful skin.

No matter what happens, remember that even options 2 and 3 will bring you back to 1.

It’s a journey and remember if you can keep a skin journey diary/blog, or whatever you find easier, do so. You’ll be amazed at how awareness and little tweaks can help you. Sometimes you can see patterns emerging. Sometimes you don’t like a texture or smell of a product, so you’re not really keen to use it. Whatever it is it’s a good idea to make notes and communicate with your skin therapist.

Just let us know the next time you come in. We can help you find solutions.

A GUIDE TO PREGNANCYSELF-CARE

A GUIDE TO PREGNANCYSELF-CARE

ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS BODY CHANGES THAT COME WITH PREGNANCY, A MYRIAD OF OTHER THINGS ABOUT YOU TRANSFORM IN SOME TRULY ASTONISHING WAYS. FROM DULLNESS, GLOWINESS, PIGMENTATION, SWELLING, ACHES AND PAINS, GIDDINESS, ANXIETY AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, PREGNANCY TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN

Pregnancy affects every woman’s skin differently…some might find flare ups of hormonal acne while others might find dryness to be a newfound issue.

Whatever is though, it’s important to steer well clear of some of our usual non-pregnancy faves like vitamin A/retinol and salicylic acid ( which it’s said may cause foetal development issues and birth defects.)

Whether it’s skincare, nutritional choices, keeping active, or soul nurturing activities, all of it directly affects that little one growing inside you. So, if it’s time for you to treat yourself as well as bub, here I have rounded up some of my pregnancy self-care and beauty essentials.

During pregnancy, certain skincare ingredients should be avoided due to potential risks to the developing baby. However, there are also many safe and beneficial skincare options that can help maintain healthy skin during this time.

### **Skincare Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy**

1. **Retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A, Tretinoin)**

- **Why:** Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and are commonly used for anti-aging and acne. High doses of Vitamin A can cause birth defects, so it’s recommended to avoid these during pregnancy.

2. **Salicylic Acid (High-Dose)**

- **Why:** While low concentrations (in products like cleansers) are generally considered safe, high doses of salicylic acid (like in peels or spot treatments) should be avoided due to potential risks.

3. **Hydroquinone**

- **Why:** This skin-lightening agent is used to treat melasma and dark spots, but it is absorbed in significant amounts through the skin, so it’s best to avoid it during pregnancy.

4. **Benzoyl Peroxide**

- **Why:** Often found in acne treatments, benzoyl peroxide should be used cautiously and ideally avoided due to potential irritation and uncertain safety in pregnancy.

5. **Phthalates**

- **Why:** Commonly found in fragrances and some skincare products, phthalates have beene been linked to reproductive issues and should be avoided during pregnancy.

6. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Agents

• Why: Found in some nail polishes and hair treatments, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and should be avoided.

7. Essential Oils (Certain Types)

• Why: Some essential oils, like rosemary, clary sage, and peppermint, can be unsafe during pregnancy due to their potential to cause uterine contractions or other side effects.

8. Tetracycline Antibiotics

• Why: Used to treat acne and other skin conditions, tetracycline antibiotics can affect the development of the baby’s teeth and bones.

Skincare Ingredients and Treatments Beneficial for Pregnant Women

1. Hyaluronic Acid

• Why: Safe and effective for hydration, it helps retain moisture in the skin, keeping it plump and smooth.

2. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

• Why: A powerful antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, reduce pigmentation, and promote collagen production.

3. Glycolic Acid (Low-Dose)

• Why: In lower concentrations, glycolic acid can help with exfoliation and improve skin texture without the risks associated with stronger acids.

4. Azelaic Acid

• Why: Effective for treating acne and hyperpigmentation, azelaic acid is considered safe during pregnancy and can help with pregnancy-related skin changes.

5. Ceramides

• Why: These are essential for maintaining the skin’s barrier function, which can help prevent dryness and irritation.

6. Ayurvedic oils, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter

• Why: Excellent for moisturising and preventing stretch marks, these oils and butters are safe and soothing for pregnant skin.

7. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (Mineral Sunscreens)

• Why: Mineral sunscreens are safe and effective for protecting the skin from UV damage without the risks associated with chemical sunscreens.

8. Oatmeal

• Why: Colloidal oatmeal is soothing and can help with itching and irritation, making it ideal for sensitive pregnancy skin.

9. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

• Why: This versatile ingredient helps with redness, inflammation, and improving the skin’s barrier, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

10. Coconut Oil

• Why: A natural moisturiser that’s safe to use, coconut oil can help with dry skin and is gentle enough for everyday use.

Pregnancy-Safe Skincare Treatments

1. Hydrating Facials

• Why: Gentle facials focusing on hydration can help maintain moisture balance and address dryness or dullness.

2. Prenatal Massage

• Why: Helps with relaxation, reducing stress, and relieving muscle tension. Make sure to go to a therapist experienced in prenatal care.

3. Moisturising Body Wraps

• Why: Safe and soothing, these can help with skin hydration and improving elasticity to prevent stretch marks.

4. Gentle Exfoliation

• Why: Using pregnancy-safe exfoliants like oatmeal, Ayurvedic scrubs using crushed walnuts, or low-dose glycolic acid can help maintain smooth skin without irritation.

5. Stretch Mark Creams

• Why: Specially formulated oils or creams with safe ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, and peptides can help prevent and reduce the appearance of stretch marks. There are special formulated Ayurvedic oils for use from 6 months onwards to ease muscle aches and to keep the skin supple.

  • I don’t stock everything here at SR but I’m happy to order products I have access to for you. Just let me know how I can help.

Always consult with a healthcare provider during pregnancy to ensure they are safe for you and your baby.

This technique may help you in labour. You can start practicing it now.

WHY A FULL HOMECARE REGIME OF PRODUCTS IS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE RESULTS

WHY A FULL HOMECARE REGIME OF PRODUCTS IS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE RESULTS

In the pursuit of clearer, younger, healthier looking skin, it’s common to wonder if a full skincare regime is truly necessary. We often hear about the latest “miracle” product that promises to solve all our skin issues. While it might be tempting to rely on just one or two products, the reality is that no single product can provide the comprehensive care needed to truly transform your skin. If you’re serious about seeing noticeable improvements and maintaining them over time, a comprehensive approach is essential.

A full homecare regime is not just an upsell from your therapist, it’s the foundation for truly transformative and lasting results.

Here’s why using the full range of prescribed products is key to achieving lasting results.

Each Product Has a Unique Function

Think of your skincare routine as a team, with each product playing a specific position.

• Cleanser: Removes dirt, oil, and impurities, setting the foundation for better absorption of active ingredients.

• Exfoliator: Sloughs away dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, ensuring better absorption of active ingredients.

• Day Serum: Delivers targeted treatment for specific concerns, such as brightening, hydration, or anti-aging.

• Moisturiser: Hydrates the skin, maintaining its moisture barrier and preventing dehydration and irritation.

• Night Serum: Provides intensive repair and nourishment while you sleep, addressing deeper skin concerns.

• Eye Cream: The skin around the eyes is much finer and more delicate. With a much smaller molecular structure, eye creams target delicate eye-area issues, such as fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness.

• Sun Protection: Shields your skin from harmful UV rays, which are the leading cause of premature aging and skin damage.

Each of these products serves an essential purpose.

Together, they work in harmony to address every aspect of skin health—cleansing, treating, hydrating, repairing, and protecting.

When one element is missing, you leave a critical gap in your skincare routine, compromising the results.

Why One or Two Products Won’t Deliver Desired Results

It’s a common misconception that using one or two high-quality products is enough to see results. However, skincare is a holistic process. No product can do it all. For example:

• Using a serum without proper cleansing means that the active ingredients can’t penetrate effectively. Dirt and oil could block absorption, rendering the active ingredients less effective.

• Applying a moisturiser without regular exfoliating allows dead skin cells to build up, creating a barrier on the surface that prevents hydration from reaching deeper layers.

In short, each product has its own independent function, but these functions are interconnected. Without the complete set of products, key skin processes are neglected, leading to slower progress and less impressive results.

Faster and More Effective Results Through a Comprehensive Routine

A full skincare regime allows for synergistic effects, where the benefits of each product enhance the efficacy of the others.

By using all the recommended products together, you create an environment in which your skin’s needs are met simultaneously.

This comprehensive approach accelerates improvements, helping you achieve visible results sooner.

Think of it like building a puzzle: every piece is crucial to forming the complete picture. Skipping even one step in your skincare routine can slow down your progress and limit the overall impact. The sooner all products are invested in and used consistently, the sooner you’ll see the transformation you’re aiming for.

Professional Guidance Matters

A qualified skin therapists provide a tailored homecare prescription, ensuring that each product in your routine is carefully selected to meet your unique skin needs. This personalised approach is what sets a professionally curated regime apart from random product selections. Your therapist understands how each product works within your specific skin type and concerns, creating a targeted routine that drives the best possible outcomes.

The Long-Term Benefits of a Full Regime

A full homecare regime is an investment in your skin’s health and appearance. Not only will you see better results faster, but those results are also more likely to be long-lasting, reducing the need for costly corrective treatments in the future. Plus, with noticeable results, you’re more likely to stick with your routine and enjoy the ongoing benefits of healthy, clearer, younger looking skin.

Conclusion: Don’t Cut Corners—Your Skin Deserves the Full Treatment

Achieving optimal skin health isn’t about finding a miracle product; it’s about following a comprehensive, well-balanced routine. Using only one or two products leaves significant gaps in your care, limiting your results and wasting time. By committing to a complete skincare regimen that addresses all of your skin’s needs, you can ensure comprehensive care that leads to visible, lasting improvements. Trust in the process, invest in a full regime, and watch your skin transform.

How to prepare your skin for microneedling treatment

Prepare your skin for microneedling treatment

Before your microneedling treatment, you must prepare your skin and make sure that it's in the most optimal state. Being in the “most optimal state” means that your skin is ready for the microneedling treatment.

Avoid certain skincare products

Microneedling treatment creates tiny punctures in the skin, so you may need to stop the use of certain skincare products such as; retinoids, acid-based skincare, and topical exfoliants from three days to a week before the microneedling session. This is to avoid skin irritation, inflammation, overdrying skin, and to reduce sensitivity.

Avoid sun exposure & hair removal treatments

Avoid any direct sun exposure to the skin for at least 24 hours prior – or where sun exposure is unavoidable wear a highly effective sunscreen. Prolonged sun exposure may cause skin irritation during treatment. If you are treating your body area, avoid shaving, waxing, or laser hair removal treatment on the areas of concern in the week leading up to your microneedling treatment.

Guidance on blood-thinning medications

The use of microneedles causes injuries that trigger the body's healing response to inflammation. Taking anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and Advil can impact this natural process by keeping the body in an anti-inflammatory state. For microneedling and skin rejuvenation, inflammation is a necessary and important response that ultimately leads to rejuvenated skin. It's recommended to refrain from taking these medications for at least three days prior to your treatment. However, please seek professional guidance from a healthcare professional before stopping medication.

Everything you need to know about Gua Sha Facials

Gua Sha, a traditional Chinese healing technique, has surged in popularity as a holistic beauty practice, revered for its ability to promote circulation, sculpt facial contours, and enhance skin's natural radiance.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Originating from the words "gua" (scraping) and "sha" (reddish skin reaction), Gua Sha involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to stimulate blood flow and encourage lymphatic drainage, release toxins, relieve muscle pain, and reduce inflammation.

When applied to the face, gently scraping the tool across the skin in upward and outward motions to stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage. This, in turn, aids in the detoxification process and helps reduce puffiness, promote collagen production, leaving the skin visibly smoother and more toned. And over time, also smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

HOW TO USE THE GUA SHA

There are over 120 points on the neck face and head. These points are also associated with the meridian lines and our internal organs.

Using all sides of the carved stone, like our Guasha Face Comb, ergonomically designed for the curves of the face and body to glide, sweep (and scraping) over pressure points.

Start with clean, dry skin. Warm in your palms the Gua Sha Oil that have nourishing properties that are suitable for your face type, along with slip to allow the Gua Sha stone to glide smoothly over acupoints and to sculpt the skin.

1. We first open the channels on the face. Use your finger or the rounded pointed edge of the Gua Sha to press on vital acupressure points around the face as indicated on the diagram.

2. The forehead. Starting from the center acupressure point move the gua sha upwards to the hairline.

3. Around Eyes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. In TCM, the acupressure points around the eyes, reflects stagnation in the body, which can result in skin and facial issues. Sweep the gua sha around eye area pressing on appropriate acupressure points, which will also open sinus and clear congestion.

4. Cheeks. Starting at the point at mouth, then the base of the nose and then the side of the now, sweep across the face to the temples.

5. Jawline and Chin. Move the gua sha up the chin to lips, pressing on the point under the lips. Perform some circular motions around chin. Guide the gua sha along the jawline, focusing on the acupressure point before the ear to release tension. This point is great for relieve the symptoms of TMJ. Sweep up the excess skin under chin, over jawline and up to the cheek bone.

6. Lymphatic Drainage. Starting at the temples, move around the ears to the acupressure points, down the side of the neck to the collarbone.

7. Finally the neck, head and shoulders. We hold a lot of tension in these areas, which can result in deep furrows and wrinkles. Using the point and curved side of gua sha, focus on acupressure points along the base of the skull and ‘scrape’ down the neck and over the shoulders. For releasing tension in the head, start at the hairline, use the gua sha in small circular movements on acupressure points along the top of the head to the back, going towards the ear in parallel lines.

FINDING THE PERFECT GUA SHA OIL

However, the key to an effective and enjoyable Gua Sha session lies not just in the tool but also in the oil used. The right oil can elevate your Gua Sha experience from good to extraordinary, providing the right amount of slip and nourishment to your skin.

After months of research and testing, we narrowed it down to a handful of amazing options for use with Gua Sha. The three oils that finally made the cut, offered the perfect balance of slip, consistency, and provided the best nutrients for nourishment, hydration and age defying properties targeted to individual skin types.

CRITERIA FOR THE PERFECT GUA SHA OIL
  1. Slipperiness: The oil should provide enough slip to allow the tool to glide smoothly without causing friction or tugging at the skin.

  2. Consistency: It should absorb at a rate that allows a prolonged massage but also leaves the skin feeling nourished, not greasy.

  3. Nutrient Benefits: The oil should be rich in nutrients that support skin health, such as vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids.

Among the many contenders, three oils emerged as the undisputed champions:

SQUALANE: THE HYDRATION HERO

Squalane is a remarkable oil, revered for its unparalleled hydrating properties. Derived from olives, squalane is a hydrogenated form of squalene, a natural substance produced by our own skin cells. This makes it exceptionally biocompatible and easily absorbed.

The slippery, almost velvety texture of squalane creates the ideal surface for Gua Sha tools to glide effortlessly over the skin, minimizing friction and enhancing the massaging effect.

What sets squalane apart is its ability to lock in moisture without clogging pores. It’s lightweight, non-greasy, and leaves the skin feeling soft and plump. For those with dry or sensitive skin, squalane is a godsend, providing deep hydration and promoting a healthy, dewy complexion.

CAMELLIA SEED OIL: THE ANCIENT BRIGHTENING BEAUTY

Camellia seed oil, often called the "Beauty Secret of the Geishas," extracted from the seeds of the camellia flower, known for its ability to brighten and even out skin tone. Rich in antioxidants, particularly Vitamin E and polyphenols, Camellia Seed oil fights free radicals and protects the skin from environmental damage.

The texture is light yet nourishing, providing a silky glide for the Gua Sha tool. Its high oleic acid content helps to keep the skin soft and supple, while the antioxidants work to fade dark spots and enhance the skin’s natural glow. Regular use of Camellia Seed oil leaves the complexion looking luminous and youthful. Making it an excellent choice for those seeking to brighten their skin.

PUMPKIN SEED OIL: THE LIFTING ELIXIR

Pumpkin seed oil is a hidden gem in the world of skincare, often overlooked but incredibly potent. Cold-pressed from pumpkin seeds, distinctive deep green hue and nutty aroma, this oil is packed with vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as zinc, omega-3, and omega-6 fatty acids, this oil is a true elixir for lifting and firming the skin.

Its rich, viscous texture provides a perfect medium for the Gua Sha technique, offering the right amount of slip without being overly greasy.

The high zinc content in pumpkin seed oil helps to boost collagen production, improving skin elasticity and firmness. Its anti-inflammatory properties also make it an excellent choice for calming irritated skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Using pumpkin seed oil in your Gua Sha routine is particularly beneficial for mature skin, providing a lifting effect and enhancing the overall tone and texture.

COMBINING THE OILS FOR MAXIMUM BENEFITS

Each of these oils offers unique benefits, but combining different oils can elevate your Gua Sha routine, providing enhanced benefits tailored to your skin's needs.

PAIRING OPTIONS:
  • Pumpkin Seed and Squalane: Ideal for dry and mature skin, this duo offers deep hydration and anti-aging benefits.

  • Squalane and Camellia Seed: Perfect for oily or acne-prone skin, this blend balances oil production while delivering lightweight hydration.

  • Pumpkin Seed and Camellia Seed: Best for mature or dull skin, this combination provides intense nourishment and rejuvenating properties.

THE ULTIMATE TRIO:

For a comprehensive treatment, mix equal parts of Pumpkin Seed, Squalane, and Camellia Seed Oils. This powerhouse blend offers hydration, anti-aging benefits, and a radiant glow, making it suitable for all skin types.

ADDITIONAL COMBINATIONS:

Besides combining these oils with each other, They also pair wonderfully with our Blue Tansy Oil. With its high Squalanecontent and jasmine scent, Blue Tansy enhanced anti-aging and regenerative properties of Camellia Seed and Pumpkin Seed Oils. What can I do to help with Line’s and wrinkles ?

There are a few good options available to help with lines and wrinkles.

Consider the following:

Dermapen4 skin needling. The best thing about Dermapen 4 skin needling for lines and wrinkles is its effectiveness in stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture. The micro-needling process encourages the skin to regenerate and repair itself, leading to smoother, firmer skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles over time. It's also minimally invasive and generally has a shorter recovery period compared to more intensive treatments.

Radio Frequency Non- Surgical Facelift: The best thing about radio frequency (RF) non-surgical facelift for lines and wrinkles is its ability to tighten and firm the skin without the need for invasive surgery. This results in a smoother appearance, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, and a more youthful facial contour. • Provide solutions for multiple skin conditions or concerns (not limited to anti-ageing).

And while MG-EXO-SKIN’s star ingredient is the Exosome, the combination of other actives all contribute to improving skin.

HylaFuse™ is Dp Dermaceuticals patented version of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). This incredible, triple molecular-weighted formula is absorbed 150% more effectively into the skin than other forms of HA allowing intense nourishment and hydration.

Zinc PCA and Panthenol are other key ingredients. They are known to support wound healing while the Calphasomes™ (Calcium Hydroxylapatite) delivery system ensures all actives are penetrated deeply into skin for optimum benefits.

How long should my products last for?

Usually 3-4 months for most products.

I find the exfoliations and mask are about 6 months, as you don’t use them as regularly.

Hydrators:

roughly using one pump per day will give you 125 days, whilst two pumps per day will give you 62 days.

Smart Serum:

Each pump delivers 0.2mls of product so will roughly give you 150 pumps per bottle.

If you use 1 pump, twice a day, you’d get around 75 days

Unlock the Power of Exosomes in Your Next Dermapen4 Skin Needling Routine

Unlock the Power of Exosomes in Your Skin Needling Routine

Skin needling, also known as microneedling, is a highly effective treatment for rejuvenating the skin, reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture. Now, there’s a way to elevate this procedure even further by incorporating exosomes. Here’s why you should consider adding exosomes to your skin needling regimen:

What are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny, extracellular vesicles that are naturally released by cells. They play a critical role in cell-to-cell communication, carrying growth factors, proteins, and genetic material that can influence various cellular processes. In skincare, exosomes derived from stem cells are particularly potent due to their regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of Adding Exosomes to Skin Needling

  1. Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation: Exosomes boost the regenerative effects of microneedling by promoting faster healing and stimulating collagen production. The addition of exosomes is amplifying these results, which leads to even more smoother, firmer, and youthful skin.

  2. Accelerated Recovery: Post-needling inflammation and redness can be significantly reduced with the application of exosomes. Their anti-inflammatory properties help soothe the skin, leading to a quicker recovery time. It’s a total game changer adding in exosomes, the downtime is significantly reduced.

  3. Improved Efficacy: Exosomes enhance the overall efficacy of microneedling treatments. By delivering high concentrations of growth factors directly to the treated areas, they amplify the skin’s natural repair processes, making the results more pronounced and long-lasting.

  4. Reduction of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: The anti-aging benefits of exosomes are profound. They help in diminishing fine lines and wrinkles by promoting the production of elastin and collagen, essential components for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.

  5. Brightening and Even Skin Tone: Exosomes can help in reducing hyperpigmentation and improving skin tone. They support the regeneration of healthy skin cells, which can lead to a brighter and more even complexion.

  6. Minimising Scars and Pores: The regenerative properties of exosomes are particularly effective in reducing the appearance of acne scars, large pores, and other skin imperfections. They facilitate the remodeling of the skin matrix, leading to smoother and clearer skin.

Why Choose Exosomes for Your Next Treatment?

Incorporating exosomes into your skin needling sessions is a cutting-edge approach to achieving superior skin rejuvenation. The results are significantly better than skin needling alone.

Their ability to enhance healing, boost collagen production, and improve overall skin health makes them a valuable addition to traditional microneedling treatments. This is the amazing benefits of science and technology being available.

If you are looking for a way to maximise the benefits of your skincare routine and achieve noticeable anti-aging results, exosomes offer a 10/10 experience. .

By adding exosomes to your skin needling therapy, you are not just treating the surface but revitalising your skin at a cellular level, ensuring your skin is going to continue to improve.

How can a reflexology treatment help me?

Reflexology can help to bring your body into balance and alleviate stress and pain.

Through the use of this holistic practice your wellbeing will be enhanced and you will experience a greater sense of calmness.

‘Holistic’ – it’s a word you’ve probably heard used a lot but what does it actually mean?   The term ‘holistic’ comes from the Greek word ‘holos’ which means ‘whole’.  It’s the practice of taking the whole person into account rather than just the symptoms of a particular illness or disease.

Holistic therapies such as Reflexology are underpinned by the idea that health is the result of harmony between the body and the mind. Therefore, you will find the focus during any holistic therapy is not purely on physical symptoms you may have, but equal attention is paid to how all your body systems are working together.  Furthermore, all of this is considered in the context of what psychological, social or environmental factors may be having an impact on you at the time too.

Stresses of any kind, be they physical, psychological, social or environmental can upset this balance and cause ‘dis-ease’.  You may be experiencing a symptom in one part of your body, but the cause may originate somewhere else – in another body system, the result of a nutritional deficiency or a physical symptom brought on by emotional conflict or stress going on in your life.

Consider the situation where ‘flu is doing the rounds in the office.  Not everybody will catch it.  Why?  They are all exposed to the same bug so it must be the internal environment within each body – their state of wellbeing at that moment – that’s the deciding factor in who goes down with flu and who doesn’t.   It’s becoming more and more evident that the onset of illness as well as our ability to heal is greatly influenced by our emotional and psychological state.

Reflexology and other holistic therapies do not see you as a collection of separate parts but as one amazing, dynamic energy system which comes complete with its own powerful chemistry set and internal pharmacy.  All your thoughts and feelings get translated into chemicals that fire off throughout your body altering the behaviour of your cells. A sad feeling will influence the cells of your tear ducts and make them produce tears and a funny joke or lovely memory will release feel-good hormones and lighten your mood.

The profoundly calm and relaxed state of being enjoyed by many during a Reflexology treatment provides the ideal conditions for ‘Bodymind’ rebalancing and healing to take place.  It is thought that in this state the mind quiets and chemicals are released which help to balance the digestive system, bring the heart rate down and reduce the amount of stress hormones in the body.  This in turn can help to reduce and relieve the many stress related symptoms which are responsible for over 70% of visits to our GPs.   In this way, holistic therapies can have a vital part to play in maintaining bodymind health and wellbeing.

For the Part can never be well, unless the whole is well….(Plato)

SHR Vs IPL: Which Laser Hair Removal Treatment Is Right for me?

SHR Vs IPL: Which Laser Hair Removal Treatment Is Right For You?

So what is the difference between IPL and SHR?

IPL uses a single intense pulse of energy that is targeted at melanin, which makes it effective on dark and coarse hair. ... SHR, on the other hand, uses gentler pulses of energy at a higher frequency so the skin is heated gently.

While IPL treatments require a session once every two weeks. SHR hair removal treatments only need a monthly visit. It is also able to target all hair types, from fine to coarse hair.

While both treatments are effective in hair removal, if you’re looking for a minimal pain experience that will help you get softer finer hair growth then you should give SHR a try.

Perth’s bespoke Skin & Body Studio, Sole Revival, recently launched their package of Buy 5 get 1 FREE, available on any area. They use the latest technology and have both IPL and SHR available. Their therapist is an accredited laser technician and laser safety officer.

“ I have been visiting Sole Revival for permanent hair removal and have seen great results! I cannot speak highly enough of Jules, my first appointment was daunting but she made sure I had all the information I needed, answered my million questions and made me feel so comfortable. The care she shows her clients is amazing. Thank you Jules”

— Kerryn

“So impressed with my recent SHR (Permanent Hair Removal) experience at Sole Revival. I could not believe how totally painless it was for my full Brazillian treatment after previously having the old school hair removal in the past - this was totally revolutionary. Cannot recommend highly enough! “

Should I get Dermaplaning or permanent hair reduction ?

When explaining hair removal options, I often get asked whether Dermaplaning or permanent Hair Reduction is better? These treatments are both good options but work in different ways and deliver different results.

Dermaplaning's first job is to the exfoliate the skin. This is done by using a dermatological scalpel on the skin. The scalpel picks up the dead skin cells away from the healthy skin cells. What does Dermaplaning feel like? I think that the best descriptions are a credit card is sliding back and forth on the skin or a cat's tongue is licking your face. While exfoliating is number one, as a by product mostly of the peach fuzz hair on the face is also removed in the process. Dermaplaning is usually done monthly on an ongoing basis. It’s a better option than waxing and gentler on the skin.

Want an instant glow? Dermaplane. Would you like better makeup application? Dermaplane. Would you like your products to do their job 100%? Dermaplane.

Laser or SHR first job is to remove unwanted hair. There are 2 different types of laser, IPL which is not pain free and feels a bit like an elastic band pinging on your skin, and SHR which stands for super hair removal, this is pain free and fast and effective. Both types of permanent hair removal will require 6-10 sessions, thereafter a yearly top up session is all that is required.

Want to remove hair permanently, SHR. Want smoother skin for a longer period of SHR. Would you like facial hair to grow in a little finer and softer? SHR.

So let's review. The Dermaplaning service exfoliates first and removes hair second. It’s ongoing, usually monthly. Having SHR treatment removes hair permanently. The main benefits of Dermaplaning are to give you an instant glow, give you better makeup application, and better product penetration. The main benefits of SHR are to permanently remove unwanted hair and have a smoother skin.

I usually offer to include the Dermaplane service, when your getting SHR done on the facial area, so you can get the best of both worlds!
